Rupee gains for 8th session to 94.46 on Jio IPO inflows, but crude at $110 caps rally

Foreign money tied to the $3.2 billion Jio Platforms IPO lifted the rupee, while costly oil pushed bond yields to a multi-year high.

The 30-second read

  • The rupee rose for an eighth straight session on Oct 21, 2026, and closed at 94.46 against the U.S. dollar.
  • Foreign inflows linked to the $3.2 billion Jio Platforms IPO helped, and RBI measures from earlier this month set the stage.
  • Brent at $110 and 5.54% inflation pushed the 10-year yield to 7.44%, its highest since 2023.

The rupee gained for the eighth session in a row on Wednesday, Oct 21, 2026, first reported by The Hindu. It closed at 94.46 against the U.S. dollar, with an intraday high of 94.43. Foreign inflows linked to the Jio Platforms IPO supported the move. NDTV Profit first reported that steps the RBI unveiled earlier in October laid the groundwork for the rebound.

The Jio Platforms IPO is worth $3.2 billion and is the largest IPO India has seen, according to The Hindu. It opened on Oct 21, and foreign investors piled in until it was fully subscribed.

The rupee's gains were limited because Brent crude rose to $110 a barrel, which stoked worries about imported inflation. Bond yields moved the other way. The 10-year G-Sec yield rose to 7.44%, its highest since 2023. September retail inflation came in at 5.54%, above expectations and close to the RBI's 6% upper tolerance limit. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions. Uncertainty over the West Asia crisis also weighed on bonds.

Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said: "Going forward, movements in the dollar index, crude oil prices and foreign portfolio flows will remain key drivers, with geopolitical uncertainty continuing to pose risks to the currency". Rockfort Fincap LLP's founder and managing partner, Venkatkrishnan Srinivasan, said: "On a durable basis, if the crude remains above $100 for the next 25 days, yields could even rise as high as 7.60%". He expects the 10-year yield in a 7.25%-7.50% range.

Why it matters

A stronger rupee and a record IPO help Indian investors and importers. But crude near $110 and 5.54% inflation raise the risk of higher borrowing costs, as the 10-year yield is at its highest since 2023.
